Follow These Tips to Care for Your Dentures

Our dentists, Dr. Ronald A. Williams and Dr. Thomas J. Rydzon, may recommend removable dentures for your smile to replace missing teeth. At The Art of Dentistry, we offer custom-crafted complete dentures and partial dentures restore your smile health, function, and beauty.

Complete dentures use a skin-toned acrylic base which fits over your gums and takes the place of all of your teeth in a full dental arch, whether one arch or both.  An upper denture covers the roof of the mouth and a lower denture is horseshoe shaped to fit around the tongue.

Partial dentures also take the place of multiple missing teeth but you still have natural teeth in the mouth which the partial can attach to securely. This denture rests on a framework which includes metal and can be removed, unlike dental bridges.

Denture care is not difficult, but it does require diligence so that they serve you well and look their best. Today we would like to share some tips for you to take care of your dentures:

-Always take off your dentures after eating to rinse food particles and any oral debris. It helps to lay down a hand towel to keep them safe from being dropped, or put water in the sink. Be gentle with your dentures when handling them so that nothing is bent or damaged.

-Next, you will want to clean your mouth thoroughly. If you have natural teeth you will want to brush them with a soft-bristled brush. You can clean the soft tissues in the mouth with this toothbrush or gauze. Be sure to clean all areas of your mouth, including the roof, tongue, and cheeks.

-To clean your dentures, brush them with a soft toothbrush once a day and soak them in a gentle denture cleaner that is nonabrasive. You want to rid them of food, plaque, and any oral debris. Brush the grooves to remove any denture adhesive.

-When your dentures are not in your mouth you will want to keep them moist. Soak them overnight in warm or cold—never hot—water or even a mild solution specifically for dentures. Always follow the instructions provided by the packaging when using solutions.

-Before putting dentures which have soaked overnight in your mouth, rinse them thoroughly to remove any denture solution residue.

-Always check with our dentists if you have any questions or concerns with your dentures, and keep current with regularly scheduled checkups. Our skilled dentist can make sure that your dentures fit well to avoid slipping or discomfort while wearing them. If your dentures are loose this can irritate your gums and other tissue.
